Which game engine powers Batman: Arkham Asylum?

The story behind the answer

*Batman: Arkham Asylum* is powered by Unreal Engine 3.

Rocksteady Studios built the 2009 action-adventure game on Epic Games’ technology, adapting Unreal Engine 3 to create the confined, atmospheric spaces of Arkham Island and its asylum. The engine supported the game’s combat, stealth systems, detailed environments, lighting, and cinematic presentation.

The game follows Batman after the Joker deliberately enters Arkham Asylum and triggers a takeover by its inmates. Its design combines exploration, detective work, gadget-based puzzles, free-flow combat, and predator-style stealth encounters rather than focusing solely on fighting.

A frequent source of confusion is the later console remaster, *Batman: Return to Arkham*. Its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions used Unreal Engine 4 for updated visuals, but the original *Arkham Asylum* release used Unreal Engine 3. *Unreal Engine 4* is therefore associated with the remaster, not the original game’s primary engine.
