The Millau Viaduct is the French bridge opened in 2004 with a deck high above the Tarn Valley.
The cable-stayed viaduct carries the A75 motorway across the valley near Millau in southern France. British architect Norman Foster and French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux developed its elegant, slender design, which uses seven towers and cable stays.
Its highest mast reaches 343 metres above the ground, making it one of the tallest bridge structures in the world. The bridge is sometimes called the tallest bridge, but that description can be confusing: the structure’s highest point is 343 metres, while its roadway is much lower.
