Which French viaduct, opened in 2004, has a summit 343 metres above the Tarn Valley?
Answer
Millau Viaduct
Answer
Millau Viaduct
The Millau Viaduct is the French bridge whose summit reaches 343 metres above the Tarn Valley.
Designed by British architect Norman Foster and French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, it carries the A75 autoroute across the valley near Millau in southern France. Its seven slender piers support a cable-stayed deck that appears almost to float above the landscape.
Construction began in 2001, and the viaduct opened to traffic in December 2004. Its highest point is often described as making it the tallest bridge in the world, although that claim depends on whether height means the deck, the roadway, or the top of the structure.
The Millau Viaduct is not the world’s longest bridge or highest roadway. Those are separate records, which are sometimes confused with its exceptional structural height.
