Which drummer played on Nirvana’s first recordings in 1987?

The story behind the answer

Aaron Burckhard played drums on Nirvana’s first recordings in 1987.

Burckhard was the band’s first drummer during its earliest period in Aberdeen and Olympia, Washington. He performed with Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic as Nirvana began developing the sound that would later become associated with grunge. His tenure ended before the band’s lineup stabilized.

Nirvana went through several drummers before achieving international success. Dale Crover played on an early demo, Dan Peters briefly joined, and Chad Channing played on much of Bleach. Dave Grohl became the final drummer in 1990. Because Channing and Grohl are much more strongly associated with Nirvana’s recorded catalog, Burckhard is often overlooked when the band’s earliest history is discussed.
