Which Chinese structure is the world’s longest bridge, stretching across the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway?

The story behind the answer

The Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge is the world’s longest bridge, stretching 164.8 kilometres across eastern China.

Opened in 2011, it carries the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway between Nanjing and Shanghai. Much of its route runs above low-lying rice fields, waterways, lakes and other soft ground, so engineers used a continuous elevated structure rather than many separate crossings.

Its length is often confused with the length of a bridge over open water. The Danyang–Kunshan structure is mostly a viaduct across land and wetlands, while the nearby 9-kilometre-long Yangcheng Lake section is its best-known water crossing. The bridge’s record concerns total structural length, not its longest individual span.
