Which Chinese bridge in Chengyang is a famous covered wooden wind-and-rain bridge of the Dong people?
Answer
Chengyang Yongji Bridge
Answer
Chengyang Yongji Bridge
The Chengyang Yongji Bridge is the famous covered wooden wind-and-rain bridge of China’s Dong people.
Also known as Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge, it crosses the Linxi River in Sanjiang County, Guangxi. The bridge was completed in 1912 and was built without nails, using traditional timber construction techniques. Its covered galleries and pavilions provide shelter from sun and rain while serving as a social meeting place.
The structure is associated with the Dong ethnic group, whose villages are known for distinctive wooden architecture. The bridge combines five stone piers with a long timber superstructure, creating a sheltered passage rather than an exposed deck.
It is sometimes confused with ancient Chinese stone bridges such as Zhaozhou Bridge, which is a different structure and far older. Chengyang Yongji Bridge is celebrated primarily for its wooden construction, covered form, and cultural connection to Dong communities, not for holding the world record for bridge length or age.
