Answer
Hangzhou Bay Bridge
Answer
Hangzhou Bay Bridge
The Hangzhou Bay Bridge is the Chinese sea crossing that opened in 2008 and is about 36 kilometres long.
The bridge crosses Hangzhou Bay between Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province and Cixi near Ningbo. It was designed to shorten road travel between the Yangtze River Delta’s major cities, avoiding the much longer route around the head of the bay.
The structure is approximately 35.7 kilometres long and includes a cable-stayed section shaped to accommodate navigation and difficult marine conditions. Construction took years because the bay has strong tides, soft seabed conditions, typhoons and complicated shipping traffic.
The bridge is sometimes confused with the Donghai Bridge near Shanghai, which opened earlier and connects the mainland with Yangshan Port. It is also distinct from the later Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau crossing, a different project with bridges, tunnels and artificial islands.
