Answer
Sydney Harbour Bridge
Answer
Sydney Harbour Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge spans Sydney Harbour between the central business district and the North Shore.
The steel arch bridge officially opened on March 19, 1932. It carries road traffic, trains, bicycles and pedestrians, and its arch rises above the harbour beside the Sydney Opera House. The crossing became a major transport link between northern and southern Sydney.
The bridge was designed and constructed by Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, England, under the direction of engineer John Bradfield. Its main arch span is 503 metres, and the complete structure measures 1,149 metres from end to end.
Its nickname, “the Coathanger,” refers to the broad arch profile. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is not a suspension bridge: its roadway is supported by the steel arch. The bridge also became a major viewing and climbing attraction, with guided climbs beginning in the late twentieth century.
