Which bridge over the Humber Estuary held the world’s longest single suspension span when it opened in 1981?

The story behind the answer

The Humber Bridge held the world’s longest single suspension span when it opened in 1981.

The bridge crosses the Humber Estuary between Barton-upon-Humber in Lincolnshire and Hessle near Hull. Its main span measures 1,410 metres, a record it retained until Japan’s Akashi Kaikyō Bridge opened in 1998.

Construction began in 1973, and the bridge was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 17 July 1981. The crossing was built to improve road connections around the Humber, where ferries had previously provided the main route. Its towers stand on opposite banks rather than on a central island or mid-estuary foundation.
