Which bridge links Brooklyn and Staten Island across New York Harbor and opened in 1964?
Answer
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
Answer
Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge links Brooklyn and Staten Island across New York Harbor and opened in 1964.
The suspension bridge crosses The Narrows, the tidal strait separating the two New York City boroughs. Its construction created a direct road connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn, replacing reliance on ferry services for that route. It was named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian explorer who entered New York Harbor in 1524.
When it opened, the bridge had the world’s longest suspension-bridge main span. Its two-level roadway carries traffic in both directions, with the lower deck added later. The structure is also a prominent part of the New York City Marathon route.
It is sometimes confused with the Brooklyn Bridge because both are major New York suspension bridges. However, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is much farther south and crosses the harbor entrance rather than the East River.
