Which bridge in San Francisco carries U.S. Route 101 over the Golden Gate Strait?

The story behind the answer

The Golden Gate Bridge carries U.S. Route 101 over the Golden Gate Strait in San Francisco.

The suspension bridge connects San Francisco with Marin County and opened to vehicles in 1937. Its main span measures 1,280 metres, making it an engineering landmark at the time of completion. The bridge was designed by engineer Joseph Strauss, with major design and analysis contributions from Charles Alton Ellis and Leon Moisseiff.

The bridge is famous for its International Orange paint, selected for visibility in San Francisco's fog and for compatibility with the surrounding landscape. It is often confused with the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, which crosses the bay east of the city.

The Golden Gate is the strait, not the bridge's official name in a generic sense; the bridge takes its name from that waterway.
