Which bridge in Quebec City is the longest cantilever bridge in the world?
Answer
Quebec Bridge
Answer
Quebec Bridge
Quebec Bridge is the longest cantilever bridge in the world.
The bridge crosses the Saint Lawrence River west of Quebec City and carries both road and rail traffic. Its main span measures 549 metres, a record for cantilever bridges. Construction was marked by two catastrophic failures, in 1907 and 1916, before the completed structure opened in 1919.
The 1907 collapse killed 75 workers and led to major criticism of the original design and construction supervision. A second failure occurred while the bridge was being rebuilt, but the final bridge was completed with a stronger design.
The nearby Pierre Laporte Bridge is a separate suspension bridge used by road traffic. The Quebec Bridge's cantilever form is the key feature that distinguishes it from Quebec City's other major crossings.
