Which bridge in Istanbul opened in 1988 to provide a second road crossing of the Bosphorus?

The story behind the answer

The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge opened in 1988 as Istanbul’s second road bridge across the Bosphorus.

Named after Ottoman sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, it links the European and Asian sides of Istanbul between Hisarüstü and Kavacık. The suspension bridge carries the O-2 motorway and was built to relieve pressure on the city’s first Bosphorus crossing.

Its main span is 1,090 metres, and the bridge’s roadway carries multiple lanes of traffic. The structure was designed and constructed by an international consortium involving Japanese, British and Turkish companies.

It is often confused with the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, formerly called the Bosphorus Bridge, which was Istanbul’s first fixed Bosphorus crossing. The later Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge is a separate, newer crossing farther north.
