Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge
Answer
Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge
The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is the bridge-and-tunnel system opened in 2018 that forms the world’s longest sea crossing.
The project links Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau across the Pearl River estuary. It is not a single uninterrupted bridge: the crossing includes a series of bridges, an artificial island and an undersea tunnel. This arrangement allows shipping to reach the deep-water ports while maintaining a long road connection across the estuary.
The main bridge section uses cable-stayed spans, while the tunnel section passes beneath a busy navigation channel. The system was designed for road traffic and includes boundary facilities because Hong Kong and Macau operate under separate legal and administrative systems from mainland China.
The crossing is often shortened to HZMB. It should not be confused with Hong Kong’s Tsing Ma Bridge, which carries road and rail traffic and opened in 1997.
