Which bridge in Budapest was the first permanent crossing over the Danube in the Hungarian capital?
Answer
Széchenyi Chain Bridge
Answer
Széchenyi Chain Bridge
The Széchenyi Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest.
Opened in 1849, it connected Buda and Pest, which were then separate cities. The bridge was promoted by Count István Széchenyi and designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark, with construction supervised by Adam Clark.
Its suspension design uses massive stone towers and iron chains. The bridge was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt and reopened in 1949, exactly 100 years after its original opening.
The Chain Bridge is sometimes confused with Budapest’s other famous crossings, including Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge. Its official name honors István Széchenyi, rather than describing its construction alone.
