Which bridge in Brasília, Brazil, is officially named after former president Juscelino Kubitschek?
Answer
Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge
Answer
Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge
Brasília’s bridge officially named after former president Juscelino Kubitschek is the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge.
The bridge crosses Lake Paranoá and connects Brasília’s Monumental Axis area with the southeastern parts of the Federal District. It was designed by architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mário Vila Verde. The bridge opened in 2002 and quickly became one of Brasília’s most recognizable modern structures.
Its three large steel arches lean diagonally across the roadway and support the deck with cable stays. The design has been compared to stones skipping across water, although the bridge is formally identified by its presidential name.
Juscelino Kubitschek founded Brasília as Brazil’s new capital during his presidency, and the city was inaugurated in 1960. The bridge is sometimes confused with Brasília’s other monumental structures, many of which were designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
