Which bridge connects San Francisco and Marin County across the Golden Gate Strait?

The story behind the answer

The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco with Marin County across the Golden Gate Strait.

The Art Deco suspension bridge opened to the public in 1937 after more than four years of construction. Its familiar international-orange color was selected partly because the coating used on the steel had an appealing appearance and helped the bridge remain visible in the region’s frequent fog.

The bridge carries U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1. It was designed by engineer Joseph Strauss, with important contributions from Leon Moisseiff, Charles Alton Ellis and Irving Morrow. Its towers rise 227 metres above the water.

The Golden Gate Bridge is distinct from the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, which crosses the eastern side of the city and opened in 1936. The two bridges are often grouped together, but they cross different waterways and serve different routes.
