Which bridge connects Denmark and Sweden through a combined bridge, island and tunnel route?

The story behind the answer

The Øresund Bridge connects Denmark and Sweden through a combined bridge, artificial island and tunnel route.

The crossing links Copenhagen with Malmö and opened on July 1, 2000. Its route begins with a cable-stayed bridge from the Danish coast, continues across the artificial island of Peberholm, and then enters the Drogden Tunnel before reaching the Danish island of Amager.

The bridge section is about 7,845 metres long and carries both road traffic and trains on two levels. The tunnel was included because a high bridge across the approach to Copenhagen Airport could have interfered with aircraft operations, while the lowered route also leaves a clear shipping passage.

The name Øresund Bridge is commonly used for the entire connection, although the bridge itself is only one part of the route. The crossing became especially familiar internationally through the television crime drama The Bridge.
