Which Batman: Arkham game was first to feature multiplayer gameplay?

The story behind the answer

Batman: Arkham Origins was the first Batman: Arkham game to feature multiplayer gameplay.

Released in 2013, Arkham Origins added the Invisible Predator Online mode, which placed Joker’s gang against Bane’s gang while Batman and Robin entered the battle as a third force. Gang members fought with firearms and explosives, while Batman and Robin used gadgets and abilities from the single-player campaign.

The multiplayer component was developed by Splash Damage, separately from the main game’s development by WB Games Montréal. It included maps such as Wayne Chemical Plant, Blackgate Prison, Joker’s Funhouse, and Wonder City Robot Factory. A separate Hunter, Hunted mode also featured Batman against rival gangs.

A common mix-up is assuming Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City introduced multiplayer because it was the major predecessor and the series’ best-known early title. Arkham City remained a single-player game, although it included playable characters such as Catwoman, Nightwing, and Robin in challenge content. Arkham Origins was the only main Arkham title to include a conventional online multiplayer mode.
