Which band featured Mark Lanegan as its lead vocalist during the grunge era?

The story behind the answer

Screaming Trees featured Mark Lanegan as its lead vocalist during the grunge era.

Lanegan joined the Washington state band in the mid-1980s and became its best-known singer. Screaming Trees formed in Ellensburg in 1985 and combined psychedelic rock, hard rock, and garage-rock elements with the regional sound later associated with grunge. Their lineup also included brothers Gary and Van Conner and drummer Barrett Martin during the band’s most successful period.

The group’s breakthrough came with the 1992 album Sweet Oblivion. Its single “Nearly Lost You” gained wide exposure after appearing on the Singles soundtrack and became Screaming Trees’ signature song. Although the band was connected to Seattle’s scene, it did not originate in Seattle itself.

Lanegan later built a respected solo career and collaborated with artists including Isobel Campbell and Queens of the Stone Age. A common mix-up is assigning him to Alice in Chains or Soundgarden; those bands had different principal vocalists.
