Which Australian bridge, opened in 1932, carries road and rail traffic across Sydney Harbour?

The story behind the answer

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, opened in 1932, carries road and rail traffic across Sydney Harbour.

The steel through arch links Sydney’s central business district with the North Shore. It carries multiple road lanes, two railway tracks, pedestrian paths and cycleways, making it a major transport route as well as one of Australia’s best-known landmarks.

Construction began in 1924 and took eight years. The bridge’s arch was assembled outward from both shores, with the two halves meeting above the harbour in 1930. Its formal opening took place on 19 March 1932.

People sometimes confuse the bridge with the nearby Sydney Opera House, but they are separate structures. The bridge is also nicknamed “The Coathanger” because of its distinctive arch profile. Its steelwork was manufactured in Britain and Australia, and the completed structure helped connect communities north and south of the harbour.
