Stone Temple Pilots’ 1992 debut studio album was titled Core.
Atlantic Records released Core on September 29, 1992. The album arrived during grunge’s mainstream rise and helped establish the San Diego band alongside prominent Seattle acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Although Stone Temple Pilots were often grouped with grunge, their sound also drew from hard rock and alternative metal.
Core produced several well-known singles, including “Sex Type Thing,” “Plush,” “Creep,” and “Wicked Garden.” “Plush” became the album’s biggest commercial success and won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994. The album eventually received multi-platinum certification in the United States.
A common mix-up is confusing Core with Purple, Stone Temple Pilots’ second studio album, released in 1994. Core is the band’s debut, while Purple followed it with songs such as “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song.”
