What year was Batman: Arkham Asylum released?

The story behind the answer

Batman: Arkham Asylum was released in 2009. Rocksteady Studios developed the game, with Eidos Interactive and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment handling publication. It launched first on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, making its North American debut on August 25, 2009, followed by releases in Europe and Australia on August 28.

The game reached Microsoft Windows in September 2009, while a Mac OS X version arrived in 2011. That later Mac release is a common source of confusion, but it does not change the game's original release year. A Game of the Year edition also appeared in 2010, another date sometimes mistaken for the original launch.

Arkham Asylum was the first major entry in the Batman: Arkham series and established the franchise's signature combination of stealth, detective work, gadget-based exploration, and free-flow combat. Its story traps Batman inside Arkham Island's psychiatric facility after the Joker deliberately takes control of the asylum. The game's critical success led to Batman: Arkham City in 2011.
