Among Us was first released in 2018.

Innersloth launched Among Us on mobile devices—Android and iOS—in June 2018. The game later arrived on Windows through Steam on November 16, 2018. Its initial release attracted only a small audience, and the developers considered abandoning the project several times while continuing to support its loyal early players.

The game’s breakthrough came in 2020, when Twitch streamers and YouTubers helped turn its simple social-deduction formula into a worldwide phenomenon. Players take the roles of Crewmates and hidden Impostors: Crewmates complete tasks and investigate suspicious behavior, while Impostors sabotage the ship and eliminate the crew.

A frequent mix-up is answering 2020 because that was the year Among Us became globally famous. It was not the launch year. The Nintendo Switch version followed in December 2020, while PlayStation and Xbox versions arrived in December 2021. The original game was inspired partly by the party game Mafia and the film The Thing.
