What was the original title of Among Us before it was renamed? The answer is Space Mafia.

Among Us began development in 2017 as a small, mobile-focused multiplayer game. Its early concept drew heavily from the social-deduction party game Mafia, but relocated the action into a science-fiction setting with astronauts and a spaceship.

The title Space Mafia was used during development and is also reflected in the game's original mobile AppID, "spacemafia." The developers later settled on Among Us, a less direct title that better fit the game's broader identity and emphasis on uncertainty about other players.

The final game launched for Android and iOS in June 2018, initially with one map and local multiplayer. It later expanded to Windows, consoles, additional maps, online multiplayer, customizable cosmetics, and multiple game modes. Although the game's popularity surged in 2020, its early development and original naming were closely tied to the Mafia-inspired design.
