What was Nirvana’s debut studio album?

The story behind the answer

Nirvana’s debut studio album was Bleach.

Sub Pop released Bleach on June 15, 1989. Nirvana recorded most of it in Seattle with producer Jack Endino, using a modest budget supplied largely by guitarist Jason Everman, who was briefly associated with the band.

The album reflects Nirvana’s early heavy sound, combining punk energy with elements of heavy metal and underground rock. Its songs include “About a Girl,” “School,” and “Blew.” Chad Channing played drums on most of the recording, before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990.

Bleach initially sold modestly, but its reputation grew dramatically after Nevermind became a major success in 1991. Sub Pop issued a remastered version that year, adding “Big Cheese” and “Downer.” A common mix-up is treating Nevermind as Nirvana’s debut; it was the band’s breakthrough second studio album.
