What river is forced through a narrow gorge at Uganda’s Murchison Falls?

The story behind the answer

The Victoria Nile is forced through a narrow gorge at Uganda’s Murchison Falls.

At the falls, the river passes through a gorge only about 7 metres wide before dropping roughly 43 metres. The constriction creates powerful spray and turbulent water as the river continues toward Lake Albert.

Murchison Falls is the central feature of Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda. The park and its river corridor are known for wildlife, including hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles, although the waterfall itself is a geological feature of the Victoria Nile.

The river name can cause confusion. The Victoria Nile flows from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert; after entering Lake Albert, the outflow is known as the Albert Nile. Murchison Falls is on the former section.
