What publication presents the Billboard Music Awards?

The story behind the answer

Billboard presents the Billboard Music Awards.

Billboard is a long-running publication focused on the music business, recording industry news and popularity charts. Its best-known chart brands include the Billboard Hot 100 for songs and the Billboard 200 for albums. The awards use performance data from these and other Billboard charts to recognize successful artists, recordings and tours.

The Billboard Music Awards began in 1990 and have generally honored achievements from the previous chart period. Unlike juried awards that rely primarily on panels or critics, many Billboard categories are tied to measurable commercial performance, including sales, radio airplay, streaming and chart positions.

The event’s format and distribution have changed over time. It was traditionally televised, but the 2023 ceremony was presented as a digital event on Billboard’s website and social platforms. That change did not alter the organization behind the awards: Billboard remained the presenting publication.

A common mix-up is assuming the awards are presented by a television network. Networks may broadcast the ceremony, but Billboard is the publication and brand responsible for the awards.
