What is the total drop of Guyana’s Kaieteur Falls?

The story behind the answer

Kaieteur Falls has a total drop of 226 metres on Guyana’s Potaro River.

The waterfall is the centerpiece of Kaieteur National Park in the country’s interior. The Potaro River flows over a sandstone plateau and plunges in one major fall before continuing through the surrounding rainforest.

Kaieteur is famous because it combines substantial height with a powerful single plunge and a large volume of water. That combination distinguishes it from many taller waterfalls made up of thin seasonal streams or multiple separate stages.

The falls became known internationally after British explorer Charles Barrington Brown visited them in 1870. Their name is commonly linked to an Indigenous Patamona legend about Chief Kai, although accounts of the story vary.
