What is the title of Peter Jackson’s 1996 supernatural comedy starring Michael J. Fox?

The story behind the answer

The Frighteners is Peter Jackson’s 1996 supernatural comedy starring Michael J. Fox.

Fox plays Frank Bannister, an architect who develops the ability to see ghosts after the death of his wife. He uses that ability to stage fake hauntings with ghostly partners, but the scheme becomes dangerous when a supernatural killer begins targeting people in the town of Fairwater.

The film combines horror, comedy, mystery and fantasy. It was Jackson’s first Hollywood feature after his New Zealand films and was produced by Robert Zemeckis, whose influence can be seen in the film’s comic supernatural adventure tone. Weta Digital contributed visual effects before its later work on The Lord of the Rings.

The Frighteners is sometimes mistaken for a straightforward ghost horror film, but its central premise is comic and its story includes a serial supernatural threat.
