What is the setting of Pokémon Pokopia’s story?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Pokopia is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Kanto.

The game begins in a world abandoned by humans and made difficult for Pokémon to inhabit. Its Kanto is therefore not the familiar lively region seen in the earliest Pokémon adventures. Instead, the player encounters damaged environments and works to restore habitats so Pokémon populations can recover.

Ditto discovers clues about what happened through an old Pokédex and records left behind by humanity. The story eventually explains that environmental phenomena made the landscape increasingly hostile to life. Humans departed for outer space and stored Pokémon in a large computer system designed to preserve them after the evacuation.

Kanto remains recognizable as the setting, but Pokopia reimagines it through a restoration and survival story. This is why the game’s objectives involve planting, constructing, watering, clearing debris, and attracting Pokémon. The region’s identity comes from Pokémon lore, while its abandoned condition creates the foundation for the sandbox gameplay.
