What is the name of the UK’s highest waterfall, in Scotland, with a total drop of about 200 metres?

The story behind the answer

Eas a’ Chual Aluinn is the UK’s highest waterfall, with a total drop of about 200 metres.

The waterfall is in the Scottish Highlands, west of Lochinver in Sutherland. Its Gaelic name is commonly translated as “waterfall of the beautiful tresses,” reflecting the appearance of water descending over the cliff. The falls are reached by a walking route from the road near Loch na Gainmhich, although access conditions can be challenging in wet and remote Highland terrain.

Eas a’ Chual Aluinn is frequently compared with Steall Falls near Fort William and Pistyll Rhaeadr in Wales. Those are famous British waterfalls, but they are not the highest in the United Kingdom. Measurements can also vary depending on whether a source counts the complete cascade or only the main uninterrupted drop.

The waterfall’s height is most impressive after periods of rain, when the stream carries more water over the cliff. In drier weather, the flow may be much thinner, but the steep rock face and remote setting remain defining features of the site.
