What is the name of the top honor at the Billboard Music Awards?

The story behind the answer

The top honor at the Billboard Music Awards is Top Artist.

Top Artist recognizes the act with the strongest overall performance across Billboard’s measurement period. Unlike awards determined primarily by industry voting, Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on chart-related data such as album and song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring, and social engagement.

The category has not always had the same name. It was first presented in 1993 as #1 World Artist, was absent during the 1994 ceremony, and returned in 1995 under the title Artist of the Year. Billboard renamed it Top Artist in 2011 as part of a broader shift toward “Top” category names.

That history explains why Artist of the Year may sound like a plausible answer, especially when older award lists are consulted. Millennium Award and Icon Award are special honors recognizing major career achievements or cultural impact, but they are not the show’s regular overall competitive artist category. Recent winners have included Taylor Swift, Drake, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Timberlake.
