What is the name of the Hawaiian waterfall formed by the Wailua River on Kauai’s eastern side?

The story behind the answer

Wailua Falls is the Hawaiian waterfall formed by the Wailua River on the eastern side of Kauai.

The falls drop in two main streams near Lihue, where the Wailua River descends over a basalt cliff. Their total height is commonly given as about 26 metres, although measurements can vary depending on whether the upper and lower sections are counted together.

Wailua Falls became widely recognizable after appearing in the opening credits of the television series Fantasy Island. The site is also associated with Hawaiian cultural traditions, including stories connected with chiefs and ceremonial cliff-diving, though visitors should treat the surrounding terrain and water conditions with caution.

The waterfall is often confused with nearby Opaekaa Falls, another well-known Kauai attraction. Opaekaa Falls is also on the island’s east side, but it is formed by Opaekaa Stream rather than the Wailua River.
