The G.I. Joe team’s primary nemesis organization is Cobra.
Cobra is a fictional terrorist organization created for the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero franchise. Its stated goal is world domination, placing it in direct opposition to the G.I. Joe Team, an elite force devoted to defending freedom. Cobra Commander is generally portrayed as its leader, while Destro, the Baroness, Storm Shadow, and other recurring villains occupy important positions within the organization.
Cobra appeared alongside the relaunch of the G.I. Joe toy line in 1982. The new line used smaller 3.75-inch figures, vehicles, and playsets, and gave the characters a continuing conflict that was expanded through Marvel Comics and the Sunbow animated series.
The organization is sometimes called Cobra Command, but “Cobra” is the standard canonical answer. Hydra is a separate villainous organization from Marvel Comics, while names such as Shadow Guard and Skull Squad are not the primary enemy faction in the classic G.I. Joe continuity. Cobra’s distinctive insignia and blue-and-black visual identity became among the franchise’s most recognizable symbols.
