What year did the original Marvel G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic series end?

The story behind the answer

The original Marvel G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comic series ended in 1994.

Marvel launched the series in 1982 as a companion to Hasbro’s relaunch of G.I. Joe, which introduced the smaller 3.75-inch action figures and the “A Real American Hero” branding. Writer Larry Hama guided most of the run, developing its military setting, detailed character histories, and ongoing conflict between the G.I. Joe team and Cobra Command.

The title ran for 155 issues, with Marvel canceling it in 1994 after sales declined. The cancellation coincided with the end of Hasbro’s A Real American Hero toy line. The final issue was published as G.I. Joe #155 and featured a stand-alone Snake Eyes story, “A Letter from Snake Eyes.”

A common mix-up is 1995: Marvel released G.I. Joe Special #1 in February 1995, but that was a separate publication containing alternate artwork, not the continuation or final issue of the main series. Later publishers revived the continuity, but those later comics do not change the Marvel run’s ending date.
