What is the name of New Zealand’s 580-metre waterfall in Fiordland National Park?
Answer
Sutherland Falls
Answer
Sutherland Falls
Sutherland Falls is the 580-metre waterfall in New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park.
The falls descend from Lake Quill into the valley below Milford Sound. Their water is fed by rainfall and snowmelt in the surrounding Southern Alps, so the flow can vary substantially with weather. Sutherland Falls is commonly described as one of New Zealand’s highest waterfalls.
The waterfall is reached from the Milford Track, one of New Zealand’s best-known long-distance walking routes. Hikers encounter it near the end of the track before continuing toward Milford Sound.
Sutherland Falls is sometimes confused with Browne Falls, another very tall New Zealand waterfall. Browne Falls is generally listed as higher, but its status as a waterfall is debated because it has a less clearly defined single plunge. Sutherland Falls is the more established and accessible named cascade.
