What is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains?
Answer
Jebel Toubkal
Answer
Jebel Toubkal
Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains.
Jebel Toubkal, also called Mount Toubkal, rises to 4,167 metres in Morocco's High Atlas. It is the highest mountain in Morocco and in the entire Atlas range, making it a major trekking destination in North Africa.
The mountain stands in Toubkal National Park, south of Marrakesh. A common route begins near the village of Imlil and reaches the summit through high mountain terrain rather than technical glaciated climbing. Conditions can still be severe, especially in winter.
The Atlas Mountains extend across Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. They are divided into several sections, including the High Atlas, Middle Atlas, Anti-Atlas and Saharan Atlas. Toubkal should not be confused with Jebel Musa, the prominent peak near the Strait of Gibraltar, which is far lower and lies outside the High Atlas.
