What is the highest peak in the Aravalli Range of India?
Answer
Guru Shikhar
Answer
Guru Shikhar
Guru Shikhar is the highest peak in India’s Aravalli Range, reaching 1,722 metres.
The summit is located near Mount Abu in Rajasthan, close to the state’s border with Gujarat. Guru Shikhar means “peak of the guru” and is associated with Dattatreya, a revered figure in Hindu tradition. A temple dedicated to Dattatreya stands near the summit, and the peak is accessible by a road followed by steps.
The Aravalli Range is one of the oldest mountain systems in the world. It runs generally from northeastern Gujarat through Rajasthan toward Haryana and Delhi. Unlike young, sharply rising ranges such as the Himalayas, the Aravallis have been heavily worn down by erosion over immense geological time.
Mount Abu is Rajasthan’s best-known hill station and sits within the Aravalli landscape. The town’s name can sometimes lead people to give “Mount Abu” as the answer, but Mount Abu is the hill station and plateau area; Guru Shikhar is the specific highest summit. The peak also provides broad views over the surrounding dry hills.
