What is the highest mountain in the Sierra Nevada range of the United States?

The story behind the answer

Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the Sierra Nevada range of the United States.

Mount Whitney rises to 4,421 metres in eastern California. It is the highest summit in the contiguous United States, meaning the 48 adjoining states, although it is lower than Denali in Alaska.

The peak stands on the boundary of Sequoia National Park and the Inyo National Forest. Its trailhead is near the town of Lone Pine, and the standard hiking route requires a wilderness permit. Despite its relatively accessible trail compared with technical climbing routes, altitude makes the ascent demanding.

Mount Whitney was named in 1864 after Josiah Whitney, then California’s state geologist. The Sierra Nevada itself is a long granite range famous for Yosemite Valley, giant sequoias, and glacially shaped landscapes.
