What is the highest mountain in the Sierra Madre Occidental?

The story behind the answer

Cerro Mohinora is the highest mountain in the Sierra Madre Occidental, rising to about 3,300 metres in Chihuahua, Mexico.

The peak lies in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo in the southwestern part of Chihuahua. The Sierra Madre Occidental is a vast volcanic mountain system extending along western Mexico from near the United States border toward the country’s central regions.

Cerro Mohinora is less internationally famous than Mexico’s volcanic summits, but it is the highest point of this particular range. Mexico’s highest mountain overall is Pico de Orizaba, which belongs to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt rather than the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The range is characterized by thick pine and oak forests, deep canyon systems and extensive volcanic rocks. The Copper Canyon region, or Barranca del Cobre, is one of its best-known landscapes, although the canyons are not themselves the range’s highest feature.
