What is the highest mountain in the Pyrenees?

The story behind the answer

Aneto is the highest mountain in the Pyrenees, rising to 3,404 metres above sea level.

The summit is in Spain's province of Huesca, in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Aneto belongs to the Maladeta massif, an area known for rugged granite peaks and the remains of the Aneto Glacier. The mountain's north face contains one of the most prominent glacial landscapes in the range.

Aneto was formerly known as Pico de Néthou in some French usage. The modern name is associated with the nearby village of Aneto. Climbers traditionally reach the summit by crossing a narrow exposed ridge called the Mahomet's Bridge, although routes vary with conditions and experience.

The Aneto Glacier has lost substantial ice in recent decades, reflecting broader warming trends in the Pyrenees. Aneto is higher than other famous Pyrenean summits such as Monte Perdido and Vignemale.
