What is the highest mountain in the Caucasus Mountains?
Answer
Mount Elbrus
Answer
Mount Elbrus
Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain in the Caucasus Mountains.
Mount Elbrus reaches 5,642 metres and is a dormant, twin-coned volcano in southern Russia. Its western summit is higher than the eastern summit, which rises to 5,621 metres. Elbrus is also commonly listed as the highest mountain in Europe under the geographic convention that places the Caucasus in Europe.
The mountain lies in the western Caucasus and is heavily glaciated. Its broad snow-covered profile differs from the sharp, isolated appearance of many famous Alpine peaks. The first recorded ascent of the higher western summit took place in 1874.
The Europe–Asia boundary is not universally defined, so Elbrus's status as Europe's highest mountain depends on the convention used. Under a boundary through the Caucasus crest, it is the European high point; under other schemes, Mont Blanc is sometimes given that title.
