What is the highest mountain in the Andes mountain range?

The story behind the answer

Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Andes mountain range, rising to 6,961 metres above sea level.

The mountain stands in Argentina’s Mendoza Province, close to the border with Chile. It is also the highest mountain in both the Western Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, making it a major benchmark in global mountaineering.

Aconcagua is a non-volcanic peak, unlike Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano on Earth. Its normal route is technically less demanding than many Himalayan climbs, but the altitude, cold, wind and thin air make it a serious expedition.

The Andes extend for about 7,000 kilometres along the western edge of South America. Aconcagua is often grouped with the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent.
