What is the height of Hawaii’s Akaka Falls, measured as a single plunge?
Answer
135 metres
Answer
135 metres
Hawaii’s Akaka Falls has a single plunge of about 135 metres.
Akaka Falls is on the island of Hawaiʻi, within ʻAkaka Falls State Park on the northeastern side of the island. The water drops from a lush, deeply eroded gorge surrounded by tropical vegetation. A short loop trail leads visitors through the rainforest to viewpoints of the waterfall.
The falls are created by Kolekole Stream, which cuts through volcanic terrain. Like many Hawaiian waterfalls, Akaka Falls can vary in strength depending on rainfall. Heavy rain increases the volume, while drier weather may leave a narrower stream descending the cliff.
Akaka Falls is sometimes confused with nearby Kahuna Falls, which is also visible from the park trail but is smaller. The state park’s name uses the Hawaiian ʻokina in ʻAkaka, a detail often omitted in informal English writing. The waterfall is one of the island’s most recognizable natural landmarks.
