What does the name “Tian Shan,” a major Central Asian mountain range, mean in English?
Answer
Mountains of Heaven
Answer
Mountains of Heaven
“Tian Shan” means “Mountains of Heaven” in English.
The Tian Shan is a major mountain system of Central Asia, extending across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and China. Its Chinese name is 天山, commonly romanized as Tian Shan, and the literal English translation is “Heavenly Mountains” or “Mountains of Heaven.”
The range contains high peaks, glaciers and broad valleys. Jengish Chokusu, also known as Victory Peak, is its highest mountain at 7,439 metres. Khan Tengri, another famous summit, is slightly lower but celebrated for its striking pyramid-shaped appearance.
Tian Shan is sometimes confused with the Pamir Mountains because both occupy the highlands of Central Asia and meet near major mountain junctions. The name “Roof of the World” is more strongly associated with the Pamirs and the Tibetan Plateau, not the literal translation of Tian Shan.
