The Billboard Music Awards honor outstanding performance on music charts.
The awards are built around Billboard’s rankings of songs, albums, artists and tours. These charts measure popularity using combinations of data such as album and song sales, radio airplay, streaming activity and other consumption indicators. Winners therefore reflect chart performance rather than results from a critics’ poll or a fan-club ballot in most categories.
The Billboard Hot 100 ranks songs, while the Billboard 200 ranks albums. Other Billboard charts focus on genres, formats and audiences, including country, R&B, rap, rock and global music. Award categories such as Top Artist, Top Hot 100 Song and Top Billboard 200 Album connect directly to those rankings.
Some special categories can involve voting or distinct eligibility rules, so the ceremony is not entirely identical from year to year. Still, its defining purpose is to recognize measurable success on Billboard’s music charts.
A common confusion is with awards such as the Grammys, whose voting membership evaluates artistic achievement. Billboard Music Awards categories are principally associated with popularity and performance in chart rankings.
