Lego The Hobbit is based on two Hobbit films: An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug.
Released in 2014, the game adapts the first two installments of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy. Its chapters follow Bilbo Baggins and the company of Dwarves from the journey out of the Shire through encounters with creatures and characters including Gollum, Smaug, and the people of Lake-town.
The game does not cover The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. A planned DLC expansion was discussed for that third film, but it was never released. This is the source of a common mix-up: the cinematic trilogy contains three films, while the finished Lego game covers only two.
Gameplay expands the film storyline with Lego-style humor, cooperative play, collecting, crafting, and character-specific abilities. Bilbo can use Sting and the One Ring, while members of the Dwarf Company contribute skills such as archery, mining, and heavy-hammer attacks.
