Tugela Falls, a series of cascades with a total drop of about 948 metres, are in South Africa.
The falls descend from the Drakensberg’s Amphitheatre in KwaZulu-Natal. Their water forms part of the Tugela River, which flows eastward through the province toward the Indian Ocean. The highest section is commonly measured at about 411 metres.
Tugela Falls are within Royal Natal National Park, a protected mountain landscape known for steep basalt cliffs and hiking routes. The falls are often described as the world’s second-highest waterfall, although rankings can vary according to measurement methods and definitions of a waterfall.
They are sometimes confused with nearby waterfalls in Lesotho because the Drakensberg forms part of the border region. Tugela Falls themselves, however, lie on the South African side of the escarpment.
