In Batman: Arkham Knight, three islands make up the playable map: Bleake Island, Founders’ Island, and Miagani Island. Together they form the central Gotham City area explored during the game.
Each island has a distinct identity. Bleake Island contains industrial districts, docks, and poorer neighborhoods; Founders’ Island is dominated by newer skyscrapers and construction zones; and Miagani Island features older, denser architecture, including Wayne Tower. Bridges connect the islands, while the Batmobile makes the larger map practical to traverse.
The number is sometimes confused with the wider Gotham skyline visible beyond the boundaries. Arkham Knight depicts a much larger city, but the playable open-world region is limited to these three central islands. Arkham City and Arkham Asylum can be seen in the distance, yet they are not additional playable islands in the main map.
The three-island structure also supports the story’s progression. Batman initially faces restrictions between districts, then gradually opens routes and infrastructure while confronting Scarecrow, the Arkham Knight, and Gotham’s other criminals.
